Etere Supports DVB Subtitling

21 March 2018

Etere Subtitle Management supports multi-language Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) closed captions as part of its suite of features for a comprehensive subtitling management.

Etere has introduced support for Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), a closed caption format with graphical images that are encoded and inserted into transport streams and identified within the Packet ID (PID). Designed to standardize displays of multiple language subtitle broadcast, DVB subtitling delivers multi-language subtitles in the form of bitmaps. DVB subtitling is used in satellite and terrestrial DVB transmissions.

What is DVB Subtitling
DVB subtitling works by rendering each character into a bit-map image and the subtitles are incorporated into a multiplex signal with all video files, audio files, private data and service information to form a complete DVB signal including text and timecode. The subtitle data is multiplexed with the video, audio data and possibly other subtitle languages and then transmitted as part of the station’s output transport stream to the viewer’s decoder. Once a decoder receives the data the subtitle is re-constructed in the decoder’s memory. A user can select whether to display subtitles or not and, if available, which one of several languages. At the appropriate time the decoder will then display the subtitle on-screen. Because the subtitles are delivered as a graphical bitmap, unlike the character code based Teletext and US style Closed Captions formats, there is no restriction on the languages that can be supported.

Benefits of DVB Subtitling
Sending subtitles as a bit-map allows the broadcaster to set the font size/ styles, character set and presentation of the closed caption for different types of programming. The result is a very high quality subtitling that does not rely on memory-intensive fonts from the user's machines. DVB subtitling supports multiple languages in a single video file. Users with a DVB compatible system can display DVB subtitles regardless of the brand of the transmission system. As DVB subtitles are inserted as subtitle tracks completely separated from the video data, DVB subtitling are hidden unless the user activate it via the television remote control.
